Week 11 From Entries to Exits

We discussed with Philip in the tutorial about Entry experiences/ Impressions.

I endeavor to develop a grand entrance which gives a clue to what is to come within the site. We have the traditional Mullum on the left and eccentric/ alternative Mullum on the right. I wish to capture these two polar characteristics of Mullum which compliment each other within the community. I think for this view I need something down the guts of the site, linking the 2 sides together more; likely to be a covered/ semi-covered path than leads down the middle of the site between the Drill Hall and Amphitheater.

Week 10 Architectural Presence and Significance

My aim for Mullumbimby is to create an architectural resolution that encourages and enhances community engagment and facilitates and drives creative and artistic  Mullumbimby culture. This proposal will be commited to environmental sustainability and will highlight and encourage Mullumbimby's connection and relationship with the surrounding landscape. It is important that this community is sustained and enhanced for the use and enjoyment for future generations. The flora and Fauna are important in this Shire and needs to be considered in a project such as this.

As an architectural designer I have drawn up other potential activities which could encourage use of this site even more, and also to provide upgraded facilities to accommodate for these. The median age of the community is 42, and so is assumed that there is also a sizable elderly community within Mullumbimby. Community activities and events which could all take place within with site are as follows in the diagram including already existing activities.

Week 9 - One to Ten

1. Project development continues specifying exactly what the individual architectural entities will be.  I endeavor to produce architectural solutions that foster the community identity and accommodates for a varying mix of locals and visitors. Through my designs I aim to encourage  interaction within common spaces to encourage/ enforce community connectivity through active participation. Spaces that accommodate for; small community based/ private events, outdoor performances and creative workshops.

What specific entities do I propose for this to occur:
-Drill hall (to be refurbished but to still retain its original character and be the chief performance stage for the Drill Hall Theater Company.  Building is a relic to this community, and has a significant story to tell. So I wish to keep this building/ traditional with refurbished lavatories/ dressing rooms/ kitchen etc.
- Amphitheater (use for outdoor performances, an alternative performance space to the Drill Hall site, for more casual and informal performances,  concerts, dances, presentations and speeches, community information seminars, exercise and yoga groups.
 - Refurbished kitchen + bar ( to accommodate for community events/ private functions. To ensure another way that The Drill Hall site can continue with profits is to share the site with the entire community, which can be hired for small/ private functions/ weddings/ birthdays etc.
- Drill hall Gallery - to showcase the history of the hall and also to display art within the community and artworks produced on site. I envisage this space to be flexible, so that displays can we maneuvered around and the space can be manipulated to how the users see fit.
- Artists studios/ art classrooms: several private rooms/ studios for artists and other members of the community can come to paint/ draw/ or make pottery and fuel the production of community art. These rooms can also be hired for group art classes/ or other events or small social support groups.  to accommodate for the development of artistic skills, community spirit and artistic sensibilities.
 -  A kiln room will also be included for firing pottery.

Mullumbimy is known for its alternative performances and creativity in music, drama and art. So I endeavored to develop and resolve architectural entities that would accommodate for these activities within the community.

As I have found Mullumbimby to be sometimes eccentric and alternative in its characteristics I have followed through the concept of Psychedelia, as I began my exploration with the construction of a Kaleidoscope to discover the construction and utilization of creating multiple reflections.

I aimed to somehow distort typical visual perceptions and so have utilized the use of Mirrors in my Designs. I aimed to create visual experiences that are somewhat disorientating and unfamiliar.
